I really enjoyed this. I really liked Happi and how she struggled and felt guilty. There was random povs that I was kind of confused why they were there. Like they made sense especially one later one but it was kind of weird. As the the second half of the book I was a little shocked because I had that thought but I was like well no way it that going to happen because it was I thought out of left field for this type of book usually but I liked it. I do wish the epilogue was a little different and we got to see some interactions.

The premise of this novel really ingrigued me (for lack of a better word) and what solidified my interest was the mention of a certain "twist". Unfortunately, I did end up catching on as there was strong emphasis put on a certain scene earlier in the novel. While I think that in some aspects the twist negated from the core issue in the novel it also added an element of needed hope.

Although I didn't give "One Of The Good Ones" five stars it's undoubtedly a book with a powerful message especially as many of the issues discussed ring true in our current society. It really gets the reader thinking about how we judge people based on their value. I loved the snippets of history, the important social commentary and the exploration of family dynamics through multiple perspectives and timelines. I also appreciated the LGBTQ + representation we get to see between Ximena and Kezi.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

Very emotional but good read. Made me think a lot about racism in this country and what I can do to help and be more aware of it. Takes a look at grief and what it means to have lost a loved one.

This book is masterfully composed. The catch phrase "The Hate U Give meets Get Out" is actually a really adequate description of this book, because not only does it tackle issues like police brutality and racism, it also has a bit of a thriller aspect to it. The writing was engaging and each sister had a distinct voice that brought something more to the story. Another great 2021 release for the books!

Thank you to Harper Collins for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly… wow.

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Not to say that I was expecting it to be bad it just was not what I expected and I was hooked. It took me three days (during the work week) to read this. I found it very hard to put down I was hooked by the characters the mystery the drama and it went in a direction that I didn’t expect.

The story follows many different characters and has a few character perspectives from completely different timelines and they all mesh together at the end which I absolutely loved.

This book talks about some serious topics like race and injustice in America, police brutally and how racism is still alive today. That is just a brief description of all the important topics that this book brings up.

The only reason it’s not a full five star for me is because I found the way the book resolved at the end was a little too much based on luck and coincidence. it’s hard to explain without going into details.

Despite that, I absolutely love this book I think it is a must read for many people and if you are a fan of Angie Thomas or Tiffany D Jackson you will love this book.

This book is going to linger in my memory for a very long time. I can't remember the last time a book made me cry. It was rich and evocative and absolutely devastating. The authors did such a good job at working with multiple timelines and alternating POVs and examining the different ways this family is coping with their grief. The generational harm they experienced, like so many POC, is gutting, particularly given the sequence of events that happen after Kezi's arrest.
Shaqueria's
death was upsetting and disappointing, but I understand why the authors did it and the point they were making.
Also, Kezi being alive was an unexpected, but interesting twist, especially considering the authors' note explaining why they made this choice. I was also happy and relieved how Kezi's journey with her sexuality was developed and with how her family reacted when they learned about her relationship with Ximena and how the authors avoided the homophobic christian narrative.

This book was very ambitious. I felt that it had a lot of potential, especially with all the complex topics the authors were aiming to address. Sometimes I can do the jumping around in time that some novels do, but it was hard for me with this novel. I was prepared for the discussions of racism and a the racist history of the US, and thought they were brought up well in some instances but in others felt it was forced. There was one major plot twist involving a trauma that I was not prepared for and didn’t realize how much it would upset me. So I am working through processing that. A pretty heavy book for YA but important topics for readers to learn / reflect on if you are in a place to do so.
