Enjoyed the first half/first quarter of the book, was caught a little off guard by rhe thriller/twist ending, but still a good read nonetheless.
It was interesting to learn that Kezi had survived, but I was devastated to learn what happened to Shaqueria. Mark's character I have no words for, I didnt expect anything (or anyone) like him to be in this story.
I did love how everyone's pov chapters weaved together to tell the full story spanning over decades! Also appreciate the touch of having the family trees and cross country map at the back of the book, it helps bring everything together :)

I was enjoying this book until the "twist". Before this moment the story was heartfelt and was involving social justice topics. I felt for Happi and her storyline was emotional and strong. She was facing losing a sister and finding out there were secrets kept from her. She also honored Kenzi with a trip to try to see things the way her sister did. This story was four stars.

Negative stars goes to the twist storyline. I hate multiple coincidences in realistic stories. All of the coincidences come after the twist and there are some doozies here. The whole storyline takes any believability from the whole book. It should have been two books, not one.

This book is masterfully composed. The catch phrase "The Hate U Give meets Get Out" is actually a really adequate description of this book, because not only does it tackle issues like police brutality and racism, it also has a bit of a thriller aspect to it. The writing was engaging and each sister had a distinct voice that brought something more to the story. Another great 2021 release for the books!
