Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a tour de force! She’s written some excellent books in the past so I knew going into this one that I would feel the same (and I did). Silver Nitrate perfectly blends supernatural horror and thriller with quite a few other tropes thrown in between. This book is dark, raw, and left me feeling uncomfortable while reading but it has some strong messages, and I couldn’t put it down! As with her previous books, I devoured this one. She’s certainly one of those authors whose books I purchase whenever she has a new release! I definitely recommend this one!
I have never read a thriller before this and I really didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did!
The story revolves around Montserrat and Tristan, who both work in the mexican movie industry. He is a washed up telenovela star, missing his old days of glory. She is a sound editor, struggeling to keep afloat in a male dominated field. When they meet the horror movie director Abel Urueta, they are fascinated by his stories about a cursed movie of his that never got finished. Lured in by the mystery and the promise of magic, they agree to help him finish it, but they are not prepared for the consequences this will have.
The story is set in the 90s in Mexico City. Although its's a bit frustrating at times when most plot points could be solved with a single google search, I really liked the the vibe and felt taken back to a different time. The Golden Age of Hollywood and old movies is long over, but it lives on in this book, like a ghost. For the most part of the book i wasnt sure what direction we were going in - supernatural, fantasy, realism - and I was pleasantly surpaied by the development.
The story dealt with a lot of interesting themes. It delved into the connection of occultism and Nazis, racism in Mexico and the workings of the move industry. But while I liked all of that just fine and the plot was great, it was the characters that really made this read worthwhile.
Montserrat is an absolute badass. She was smart, capable and quick to understand what was happening - the perfect main character to a horror setting like this one. Tristan, bless his soul, played the claasic role of the bimbo that needs fo be saved - and I loved him. He was so silly, and sweet and their friendship meant everything to me. Only the neding felt a little - disappointing? But I guess that is how adults handle their feelings.
While not quite as scary as feared, an exciting, interesting and touching story!

Have you ever heard a horror story during a camp fire that was wonderfully horrific and so subconscious that you were not able to sleep the following night? If so, this isn't it. The setting is there and the two main protagonists are OK but somehow Moreno-Garcia fails to write the horror in the story. Montserrat and Tristan sort of stumble around Mexico City looking for clues and the ghosts and demons are written very mundanely. For a modern horror it failed in execution.
