2.5✨ rounded down
I’ve read a fair few Moreno-Garcia works now so I knew what to expect in terms of writing style and thematic elements
Maybe it’s because I’m fairly new to works of magical realism intersecting w horror, it for some reason I really struggled to stay invested in these characters and the plot
I think I have a more positive things to say about Tristán, whose character felt more fleshed out with more tangible things relating to the plot and why he is the way he is, but with Monsterrat it felt for the most part like her self was mostly her friendship/codependency/unrequited love for Tristán and then becoming obsessed with Ewers
Not my favourite, but not mad to have read it

I enjoy Silvia Morenos novels, this was good, went a different direction that I originally thought. Might have been more correct to label it supernatural instead of horror.
And i know a bunch of people didnt like the two getting together at the end but i thought it was sweet and well done throughout the book

Another in a string of books I’ve read lately that I wanted to love, but just haven’t. This book had an interesting concept, but weak execution of it, and had characters whose relationship I could not root for.
BookClub Read for September: Tough read because it felt like everything was moving so slow and there was a lot of references to culture, movie culture, actors/ movies of that decade as well as Nazi’s & occultism. Overall… a lot to bring together. The first 70% of the book was slow, mostly to lay the framework of this? Listening to the audiobook was WAY easier and held my attention better. I had to switch over to audiobook to finish it in time.
3.5
I read this almost a year ago, but it's interesting how the details about the movie industry stuck with me, for example, sound editing, directing, etc. I think about that aspect of the story quite a lot, it was my favorite part of the novel.
The writing and the characters were also great.
What ultimately brought down the rating for me was the 1st part of the book. Everything was moving at a snail's pace, and it took me a while to get into it.
I want to read more from Silvia Moreno-Garcia and wouldn't mind reading other books, by different authors, with this concept.
