“López says the living hold on to ghosts. You made a haunted house out of your own flesh and bones.”
What a ride.
It took me a while to get through this one and, thinking back, I kind of understand why. While I love the premise of this novel, it had so much going on all at once. It was a lot to juggle and I found myself, at times, dreading picking it back up because it meant that I had to remember all the moving pieces. There were so many characters and roles and elements of magic and plot points and backstories that the overall mystery narrative following Montserrat and Tristán sometimes felt like background noise to learning about cult activities or film history or the mechanics of spells. I wish some of the elements could have been pared down just a little bit to give more attention to the protagonists, but, honestly, that's my biggest gripe.
That said, I did enjoy this read. I found the ideology of the cult really intriguing, and just wished I understood it a little better by the time I got to the climax. I loved the dynamic between Tristán and Momo (tbh, wish they would have had a different ending, personally--but that's another thought for another day).
Overall, entertaining, spooky vibes, just would have liked a bit quicker pacing :)
Once it picked up I didn’t want to put it down!! But I think the ending felt a little rushed after the slow pace of the first 2/3 of the book. She spent too much time telling us about Tristan & Montserrat’s jobs & dating lives & not enough time on Alma’s magic or Clarimonde’s cult.
