3.5/5⭐️

I read it in french and gosh I hate translations, it’s final. I read only 2 good translations this past year and this book isn’t one of them :)

So yeah I think reading it in french influenced my opinion on the book. But also, the info dumping in the first ish pages? Not a vibe.

Characters are alright, didn’t feel much for them. The plot was alright too, quite basic. Very simple at the beginning, got more complex with time but still not complex enough to my liking. It was easy to read though, so that’s nice.

World building in the basic basic fantasy world, no complaint. It did the job. I can’t always read books with super original world building haha.

I felt nothing as I went, apart from disgust (Hagan u abhorrent hideous pos). The ending, and its plot twist sadly did not surprise me because I had guessed it about 120 pages into the book. Not saying I’m a genius, but for once my theories were so on point I was disappointed not to be surprised.

Reminded me a lot of Game of Throne too! Some names, and the plot, and the vibes. And overall had a feel to it.

Would like to state that the MC’s name (or the one she chose anyway) is Sable??? In english it might sound alright, but as I read it in french, well… sable is the french word for sand. So just picture it.

Overall good book, not amazing, not a masterpiece but it did its job : to occupy my day. Onto the sequel now which I’m hoping might be better?

WOW WOW!!! Hâte de lire le second tome!

3.5.
I did like the writing, the pacing, and the two MCs in this. The magic and world building were nice especially the use of the flute as a weapon, but I wished it had more substance so to speak.
The other characters were a flat and uninteresting, especially one of the MCs brother and sister, also the Inquisitor had a lot of potential but his plot left me cold.
Also the GOT influences were obvious in the geography (like having a region named The Fingers in the exact same shape as the one in Westeros -_-). And one of the characters whose middle name is Oberyn...

3 stars ✨/3 stelle ✨
TW: mention of r*pe

What I liked:
• The world building was very captivating and well done, the powers portrayed intrigued me and kept me curious throughout the whole reading.
• Nice tension and chemistry between the 2 main characters.
• Lovely writing, fresh, very straightforward.

What I didn't like as much:
•The characters presented felt underdeveloped in my opinion, at times even flat. Especially the secondary characters, at times it was hard to pinpoint who was talking and tell them apart.
•The pace was a bit all over the place in the first half, the second part picked it up luckily.
• So. Fucking. Many. Mentions. Of. R*ape. Like it felt gratuitous at some point, I didn't feel it so necessary to the plot.
• Too many parts where it was too much tell and too little show, lots of things were told us rather than showed us.

Overall, it was a nice reading and I'm definitely curious about the second book, especially with the new setting and Imari coming into her powers!

DID NOT FINISH: 72%

  • The writing got better but is still pretty bad. It was not atmospheric or lyrical, and I had trouble figuring out the characters feelings or emotions most of the time, even tough they went trough a lot.
  • The 1⭐️ is for the participation and the other because I read 200 pages in a day ,because I had faith in Jeric (he got worst), and because I didn’t see the racist undertone right away so clever Barbara kloss
  • The pedophilia scenes just to villainize Hagarn even tho he IS THE VILLAIN ALREADY you don’t need to make him a pedophile to prove us that he literally ENSLAVES people
  • The love interest is uh… girl get away from him he’s been killing your people for two decades (even if you don’t know it yet) they don’t give the explanation of why he is so cruel he could’ve been the cliche nice rich prince in a bad family but he wasn’t he’s so racist his friends are trash he’s a serial killer (1000+ people) the love is practically non existent I liked him at first until he REFUSED TO KISS HER BC SHE IS FROM Istraa like there’s no redemption arc after that. Also he is randomly homophobic ?? We didn’t to add that to his character.
