As someone who often questions gender and doesn’t really know where they fit thus was super validating. Also gave me some explanation/education talking points

When I found out that Gender Queer was one of the most challenged books in America for years on end, I knew I had to read it. Memoirs are my jam, especially ones that are raw and honest. It seems like this book has received a lot of criticism for the author not having all the answers… but isn’t that kind of the point? First of all, I’d like to speak with whoever DOES have all the answers about gender and sexuality. And second, Maia Kobabe is totally transparent that eir journey is still ongoing at the point of writing/illustrating this memoir. Overall I really enjoyed the art and narrative style. This was a great read to kick off pride month, too!!

I also loved the shoutout to Alison Bechdel - Fun Home and Are You My Mother? were my introduction to graphic novels and a couple of my favorites.

I recently read the Out Side and although I love the graphic novel format, the very short format of those comics didn't feel like ENOUGH to understand anyone's gender journey. This was very satisfying in being much more complete, also covering the author's journey of learning e is asexual as well.

I'm glad to have read this at the same time I've been reading What's the T? By Juno Dawson. They are a great compliment to each other-- the informative and the personal.
