I'm not the target of these books so I'll keep rating them 3/5 instead of 2/5 as long as they're not problematic or sth. They're so much fun, I love shape shifting. I just hope the characters were more fleshed out

Reading this made me really glad I'd decided to do this reread, as there's so much I'm realising I'd forgotten from reading the series as a kid, or stuff that just went over my head. In hindsight, the way the books draw parallels between the kids morphing and the Yeerks controlling people is fascinating (in this book we see that they both struggle with controlling their new "form", and both are at risk of losing control to the original mind) though it's unclear if there's going to be any deeper meaning to that or if it's just a neat parallel. I'd also forgotten how much agency the Yeerk hosts are actually shown to have - I'd remembered the books basically just portraying them as powerless, but in this book we see that the Chapmans are able to fight back against Yeerk control and even get a glimpse of an uncontrolled Chapman. Honestly the Chapmans backstory as a whole is really interesting - I don't remember it getting expanded on but I kinda hope it does!

I was hesitant to reread this at first because obviously it’s for very young readers, but I loved them SO much as a kid when I could get my hands on them. So I decided to start from the beginning when I found the first 3 at Goodwill. I read it in a few hours and I honestly loved it. It holds such nolstagia for me and it’s actually hard to put down. It makes me want to read the whole series again!

I can’t believe I didn’t read these books as a kid. These go crazy. I was not expecting a mature and sensitive portrayal of depression and love in a children’s book about animorphs.

Apparently these only get more crazy? But this is the second one and already darker than I expected.

It's fun to reread old childhood favorites. This one had some good moments but also seemed to get bogged down explaining things the first book explained. I know they did that for people who hadn't read the first book, but it feels like it could have been done in a much smoother way.
