Couldn't put this one down! Enjoyed it much more than I expected. Up there with Francesca's story, though I appreciated the spice and pining in hers, and this one was much more "separated by circumstance" but both were in love with one another.

   Personal Bridgerton Rankings:
1. When He Was Wicked (Francesca and Michael)
1. An Offer From a Gentleman (Benedict and Sophie)
3. It’s in His Kiss (Hyacinth and Gareth)
4. On the Way to the Wedding (Gregory and Lucy)
5. To Sir Phillip, With Love (Eloise and Phillip)
6. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (Colin and Penelope)
7. The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony and Kate)
8. The Duke & I (Daphne and Simon

I've decided not to numerically rate this nor any Bridgerton books since I'll always be influenced by the show. Instead I'll share what I liked/disliked in comparison.

I will say, though, that I definitely liked this book better than the previous two. And that's saying something since Cinderella retellings and love at first sight aren't among my list of favorites.

While there were plenty of times Benedict was an arse & I hated him in those moments, I liked that there was finally some responsibility taken by the MCs & apologies were made. While they weren't always resolved to my liking, actions were at least taken, which was lacking in the previous books.

I do agree with many fellow post-show readers that show Benedict is superior and it will be interesting to see what all remains from this story when his season comes considering much more is already being explored with his character than we see in the book and timelines are already askewed.

Besides, book Benedict is pretty dull, yet he wonders why he's referred to as "Number 2."

Also Violet Bridgerton is the best Mama of the ton.

liked the book besides
the part where she was sent to jail and they had to come save her. it felt a little too silly and i kept thinking while reading it how stupid it was. i think they will probably change that in the tv show. benedict was also an ass at times pressuring her to be his mistress. made it a little hard to believe he was in love with her (not to mention he kept thinking about this lady in silver) however it wasn’t enough to make me dislike the story as he seemed to develop as a character and become more self-aware.
other than that tho enjoyed it from start to finish as a light read to get out of a slump. the relationship could have been fleshed out a bit more but they were also likable. best to go into it with no expectations as benedict is a bit different than the tv benedict.

leans heavily into the Cinderella aspect of the story and the love at first sight trope so the development of the their feelings felt rushed despite the author trying handwave it because of the time skip.

benedict pressuring sophie to be his mistress really gave me the ick, especially when he just wouldn't let it drop and just didn't seem to understand her pov until the 11th hour. which fine he has his revelation and apologies and gets to play saviour but i was having a hard time seeing his advances as romantic when it mostly came across as entitled. he had his moments where he was roguish and charming but he could really be a dick. idk the power dynamics weren't hitting. i did like sophie though. i enjoyed her pov

This has been my favorite Bridgerton book so far!! And maybe that’s partially because I just LOVE fairytale retellings, especially Cinderella ones (even though Disney’s animated Cinderella is not my favorite in the least). But also cause Benedict is officially my favorite (in the books atleast), book Anthony & Colin were very lacking, I love them in the show, but their book personalities had a lot of… I guess faults, that I was not a fan of. But Benedict… I don’t know what it is…but Benedict just stole my heart!
Especially the moment he realized he wanted to marry Sophie despite him thinking she was just a maid. He proved to be sweet & caring, and willing to say fuck society for this girl that he just couldn’t help but love!! It’s inspiring, and we all deserve a Benedict Bridgerton! 💜

While the story was lovely and I teared up a few times, I just can't get over that it's just a Cinderella retelling.
