Of a certain era, place, and social fabric one needn’t be a part of to find relatability or to have a profound reaction. Many of the conflicts (internal and external) are so timeless and universal to how gay men continue to live their lives that I found it profound and a little sad too—life lessons run amuck within the ruts these characters dig themselves. You can’t help but root for them to out run their own egos, fears, let down their guards and let in love.

Even though I found this novel to be disappointingly redundant at times, the story still managed to move me and make me think. Sutherland is one of the funniest characters I've read about in a while and I couldn't help getting emotionally attached to him. I really wanted to love this book because it's regarded as a gay classic and I'm disappointed that I didn't but it was still a worth while read.
