A really interesting tale, the main character hears a true crime podcast involving people from her past with a conclusion she finds hard to believe and she sets out to find the truth, and in an interesting turn of events her sidekick records their own podcast making their efforts public and sending them on the run with danger around every corner. Looking forward to reading the second book!

This was a fun read that had some dark moments as well. It wasn’t super great as a mystery—there were only a handful of suspects and only so many ways it could have happened—but it was still captivating I should say. Hamish and Estelle should go fuck off honestly.

I will say though that my favorite chapters were the podcast transcriptions in the beginning of the book…

The first half of the book was intriguing. There was suspense and the yacht mystery was super interesting. But once Anna decides to solve the mystery on her own, the story just fell flat. By that point o was too far along to abandon.

Good thriller/mystery audiobook that kept me entertained. I liked the podcast element.

Pros: fast read, wanted to find out what happens next, some surprising turns, stories within stories
Cons: Cared more about the plot than the characters? Also fairly frequently typos

Overall: enjoyed it for what is was - a breezy beach/vacay thriller (although I wish I was ON vacation)

3.5, rounded up.

The worst part of this book is that it is described as “darkly comic” and the author is said to write with “wit and spark”. In my opinion, violent gang rape, gruesome murders, gratuitous animal abuse, and a person struggling with an eating disorder are not lightly or darkly comic, and not witty either.
The podcasts on this book are just random 5 minute “episodes” posted to social media, not like 1/2 hour or hour long episodes on an app. The author said she started writing years ago so I guess that’s what pods were like then - also maybe because she’s in Scotland. Anyway it was hard to understand how Anna could get immersed in something short like that and how these were instantly picked up and viral.
Most of the book was unbelievable.
Fin mashed a “brilliant” revelation about a picture from one of the podcasts, which should have been obvious to everyone. Then the rest of the story he’s an idiot who can’t believe a kidnapping attempt showed that people are after them.
Also the implications of a character having two different sides of clothes ours not immediately obvious.
The villain, Gretchen Teigler, is supposedly so rich, powerful, and influential that getting police involved is useless to even try and then.
2 stars only because the mystery was interesting for about 2/3 of the book, though it became obvious before the big revelation.

SPOILER ALERT

the police come to the rescue with not reason given for why they believed the good guys that and showed up.
