I don't think I've ever been as infuriated by a book or a single character as I have by this book and it's main character. And I've read the Twilight books!
Seriously, though, this book starts off infuriating, gets even more so, carries on that way, gets marginally better, and then ends with sappiness.
Clary Fray (stupid name, remarkably similar to the author's own name) is the stereotypical Mary-Sue. She has superpowers, can do anything she wants, is beautiful and blah blah blah. I couldn't stand her in this book. She was rude to just about everyone she met. She insisted on following the Lightwoods and Jace to Alicante even though she had been told not to (it's against the law without permission and without a specific portal to go to on the other side, but it's okay because Clary has SUPERPOWERS AND CAN DO WHAT THE HELL SHE WANTS), acting like a spoilt brat in the process. She sulked when she got told off by Luke (it's okay to be a father figure if you're nice, but when you dare tell off the heroine of the story you get banished from the book for several chapters). She was protected by Luke's sister, yet shunned even that and insisted on barging into someone else's home when she wasn't invited... Are you getting the general idea? Clary is a spoilt brat, stubborn, incredibly unlikeable, and very annoying.
And it gets worse! The first thing she says to her mother when she finally reappears isn't "I missed you, Mom" and hugs her. No, she YELLS AT HER MOTHER AND THEN RUNS OFF. Nice kid. These people are a bunch of saps who appear to never discipline their children at all. And worse still? Jace likes this trait about her. But still, Jace is a jerk, at times controlling (has a bit of Edward about him, this guy), is described in flowery and adoring adjectives whenever he appears, and isn't much more likeable than Clary.
The plot is better than it was in the last book, but as I spent the majority of it wanting to kill the main character, it didn't help much. There is a character death, which was completely unnecessary, and most of the surprises were guessable. The main thread throughout the three books has been the forbidden incestuous love between Jace and Clary, and it was obvious from the start of this plot-thread that the author would resolve it in a way that would mean the two could be together. I liked the confrontation with Valentine, though as a villain he wasn't really much cop, and can see where the author will go with her future books in this series (Sebastian anyone?).
All in all, this was the weakest book of the three thanks to some really poor characters and a generally predictable and at times too similar story.
