This was a very strange book, and kind of uneven. There were parts that I liked, parts that I didn't like, and parts that were just gross. Yet I kept turning the page... I feel like a bunch could have been cut from the novel and it would have been just as good. There were about 4 or 5 places where it could have ended. The real beginning of the story was about 80 pages in... it was just strange. I liked it okay though.

Like all the best horror, weird, gross, kinda horny, never fully explained, rich and dreadful and spooky and gory, gets its claws in and won't let go. Warning: One of the POV characters is a rapist.

The Devourersis an instance of where first-person narration feels natural and is the best way to tell the story. This book is about the different factors—language, self-identification, intelligence, self-control—that define a person and how those can mold and change. Ideas of identity are explored through soft, dreamlike writing even where the subjects are gritty, making a book that’s both easy to read and hard to digest. I can’t quite agree with the direction the book takes, but that’s an entirely personal matter. Whether or not it rings true to you, the Devourers is an ethereal-seeming story that integrates folklore and fantasy with alternate models of self and identity, and it’s an enjoyable read.
