Coveted by the Bear by T.S. Joyce

I will admit I am addicted to T.S. Joyce books. I am still reading through her extensive library. This was a great book to squeeze in between others because it is a single title. By the time I finished I was wishing it was a series of Caleb and Mira's life for years to come.

I found this book unique because it did not start with shifters. It started in a small town with Mira being shunned by everyone in town. There was absolutely no compassion for someone that was a survivor. At the Quick store register she discovers she doesn't have enough money. As others are teasing her Caleb steps up to help, but she doesn't know how to except it.

Mira lives on her own in a rural area. She hunts what she needs. When she stumbles across Caleb being toyed with by a bear shifter she has no choice but return the favor and step in.

Coveted by the Bear is beautiful journey to strength, acceptance, peace and love. It won't be easy. It won't be fast. It won't be without its dangers. It will leave the reader wanting more.

Overall a good story. Didn't care for the "I'll ignore her so I don't hurt her," or the "I'll dump him so I don't hurt him" nonsense.

I felt like this book was original in how it handled Mira’s character, and I liked that, but the romance was too tame for me.

Rating and Review

I specifically read this book for the FMC-misjudged-by-the-entire-town angst, and on that front it delivered. But everything else felt lacking.

“I wanted to protect you. I thought I was doing the right thing, but I can’t do it anymore. I can’t hurt you or stay away from you.”

➢ The MMC was a tool. He decided that his best course of action was to repeatedly treat the FMC like trash so that she would be able to resist him.

“Why didn’t you put me in your uncle’s room? He won’t need it.”

“That room is haunted,” she said matter of factly.

➢ This is a paranormal book, so when the FMC—one who is aware that supernatural beings such as bear shifters exist—declares, in all seriousness, that a room is haunted, I expect the author to elaborate or explain. Instead the subject is dropped.

Half of the town had helped me scour my woods for him years ago, but there was no evidence he had ever existed.

➢ No explanations. Just BTW the dog was imaginary.

➢ This was one of the most unparanormal-paranormal stories I’ve ever read. The fact that the MMC is a bear shifter is basically ignored for most of the story. Supernatural healing isn’t a thing. The MMC is admitted to a hospital without any acknowledgement of blood tests.

➢ Tell me why I thought the author was trying to imply that Mira’s family had some sort of supernatural connection to the land they lived on? There were multiple instances that made it seem this way, one of them being the fact that Mira and her uncle knew about shifters when nobody else did.

Overall, this book needs a lot editing. The plot was all over the place and the storylines were giving me mixed signals.

Excellent

There were times when I didn't like Caleb all that much, but he becomes redeemable. What I loved the most is while this is moderately exaggerated of what small town life can be like it's more realistic than not. I loved that this book didn't romanticize small town life like so many writers who've clearly never lived it, do. Reputation is everything and rumors can break you, cost you jobs and relationships and because none of them have anything better to do they think they're justified in spreading their gossip, their rumors and their lies. No one care about the damage it does to the topic of their malice, so long as they have someone to judge and whisper about. That is the most realistic description of small town life that I have ever read. And the story gets high marks because of it.

What I really didn't get was why Joyce bothered to make it a shifter story when being a shifter was such a minor part of the story that it may have even better better if she'd left it out all together.

This story is a heart tugging and raw and so very much recommended.

WoW. Caleb is the sweetest guy ever. Seriously, I think I might get diabetes just from reading about him. He's got that swoon factor, you know? Haha!

But I gotta admit, I'm a bit confused about the timeline in this story. I mean, they've got horses and cars coexisting, and it's throwing me off a bit. I can't wrap my head around when exactly this all takes place.

And, Caleb's chill attitude about everything is kind of absurd in the best way. It's like he's taking everything in stride without a care in the world. It's both frustrating and endearing at the same time.

Oh, and unanswered questions. Like, how the heck did Mira know about the shapeshifters? It's one of those things that would've made the story even more captivating if we got some solid explanations, you know?

But at the end of the day, this book is all about the romance, and on that front, it totally delivers. I mean, those scenes where Caleb is helping Mira with everything right from the beginning? They're absolutely swoon-worthy.

I absolutely adored all the scenes of Caleb helping Mira with everything right from the start. It was so satisfying to read. There's just something about a man building a house, stocking groceries, and doing everything he can to support the woman he loves. It's like my heart can't help but go Tha-Thump!! I live for those moments ❤️✨

Mira had so much heartache in her young life and Caleb was just the bear man to help her out, love her and set her free.
