Holy shit. A deeply unsettling, morbid take on traditional fairy tales. The juxtaposition of soft, watercolor illustrations of the cute child-like characters with the horrible deeds they do to each other and the animals to survive in the woods is immensely uncomfortable but certainly engaging. This dysfunctional band of minuscule characters (think Thumbelina) lives around/in the corpse of a dead girl in the forest, manipulating each other and trying to tame nature, typically leading to gory, brutal results. I physically cringed on many pages throughout; this graphic novel is not for the faint of heart!
One of the weirdest graphic novels I've ever read. I mean that in a good way, but the cover is very deceiving, and it's not for everyone. The illustrations are gorgeous and it's a fast read that's worth savoring. "Beautiful Darkness" makes you think it will be a heart-warming Disneyesque picture book, but it quickly reveals itself as a twisted tale like most fairy tales originally were. It's unsettling and charming all at once.
