A super dark take on the "little people" folklore trope. The art is absolutely gorgeous. So gorgeous that my "oh god" reactions were always accompanied with a morbid appreciation. A very quick read that did not disappoint.

This was ... horrible.
I appreciate the art and I suppose what the story was going for? But it’s just not for me at all, it made me feel very icky :/

I picked this book up because I'd seen it on several "best of" lists, but it wasn't for me. It was really creepy and even though my guess is that if I read it again and thought about the story I'd "get it" a bit more, I absolutely don't want to.

Deliciously bonkers.

My goodness. What gorgeous, glorious, disgusting tale. I was unsettled, humbled, and obsessed while reading. Everything about this is perfection, especially the ending.

So creepy with a lovable exterior, felt so much like a haunted fairy tale with such lush forest illustrations and the constant tightrope between life and death for the little characters

This is a really beautiful dark anti-fairy tale book. We've had an edition of it in our store for over a year, and I flipped through it, imagining it was a fairy tale book.

It is not.

The turn in the introducory pages is astounding, and it gets creepier from there.

I recommend it for people who like their childrens' fables with a touch of murder and Gorey-esque dread.
