Beautiful Darkness is a gorgeous looking graphic novel that has a great concept, but was somewhat lacking in the execution. I would have loved to see more cohesive plot for such a fanciful world.

A group of small and mysterious creatures are thrown from their world of whimsy to emerge in a forest field where a young girl lay motionless and rotting. With no concept of who this girl was and with a sudden need to survive these borrower sized people must face a cruel new world.

The mix of innocence and brutality made the characters and situation interesting, but without a central narrative driving the plot I found that small details were relied upon a little too heavily. You feel as a reader that it is trying to say something, but because the action is so general it's difficult to put a pin in exactly what that message is.

On the other hand, where this book succeeds it goes above and beyond. I know I have already mentioned the art, but this style was so captivating and perfect to the story that it was difficult to look away. I was instantly drawn to this book the moment I saw it. I am very happy that I picked it up, even if there were some let downs, it was still a very worth while read.
