One of my favorite in the series so far! Equal parts dark and hopeful, I really enjoyed seeing the development of beloved characters, as well as the introduction of the cadets, and the mystery of the map.

Reine-Marie took a forkful of the moist scrambled eggs. A long thin string of Brie clung to the plate and she lifted her fork above her head for amusement, to see how long the string could stretch before it broke.
Longer than her arm, it seemed.
Armand, smiling and shaking his head, pulled it apart with his fingers.
“There, madame, I set you free.”
“From the bondage of cheese,” she said. “Oh, thank you, kind sir. But I’m afraid the attachment goes deeper than that.”

Well this was an interesting new Gamache. First I had to adjust to a new narrator. That was a little hard. So much of the characters' personalities have been revealed in the voice of the narrator.

Then the story - this was a great way to bring in a new cast of characters. Four fascinating cadets who will create tension and plot lines in future books.

I was, however, a little disappointed that the big reveals were not much of a surprise. I guessed the identity of the Goth cadet early on. I felt the perpetrators were pretty obvious despite attempts to muddy the waters. The significance of the map was clear from the get-go. Perhaps I am just getting to know the characters and the author so well that I am not so easily fooled. Or perhaps Louise Penny was not sufficiently circumspect in this book.

as always, I am anxious to see where she takes us -- and Inspector Gamache -- next.

My new favorite author. And possibly favorite human after reading the author’s acknowledgements. Wish I would have started the series at book one.

Great addition to the series. Many threads neatly bound at the end.

My favorite in the series (so far).
