A Great Reckoning

Louise Penny

Finally one I enjoyed as much as the earlier novels in the series. Almost made me forget about The Nature of the Beast. Almost.

I don’t know how Penny wraps up a horrific trauma at the heart of a mystery, with intimate meaningful relationships, corruption, broken souls, moral issues and food!

Yet another wonderful Gamache book. I’m almost at the most recently released book, which is sad because soon I will have to wait a long time for the next one! I love the way the story is stretched evenly across the book, where every sentence is either important to the plot or hilarious. Or occasionally both. Love this series so much!!

Another fantastic book from an exceptional writer. Each new book in the series provides me with an opportunity to visit with my friends in Three Pines. I enjoy every minute that I am with them and am sad to end the visit - until the next book comes along and I cherish them and their enchanting village all over again.....

Armand Gamache is now the commander of the Sûreté Academy that trains police officers. He knows that the rot in the Sûreté stems from corrupt leadership in the academy and not just corrupt leadership in the police force itself. Gamache makes changes and finds a group of 4 cadets to mentor and even gives them a mystery to solve: an orienteering map of Three Pines. As he begins to clean things up, a professor, known as the Duke, is found murdered. Gamache knows that his 4 cadets are involved and at risk. As Gamache and the cadets get closer to solving the map, they also grow closer to solving the murder.

Many people who I respect love this series, but it just seemed to, well, seemly for me. But when forced to read this latest Inspector Gamache novel for book club, I discovered why people love him. Likeable and well-drawn characters, a great setting, and a good mystery, with WWI history thown in for good measure. Not sure I'm going in for the whole thing... but maybe a few.

Always a pleasure to read her books. It almost like Three Pines "porn" though I was missing the extra detailed food descriptions this time from the Bistro. The descriptions of the baked goods aways drives this gluten free girl wild with jealousy.

And I'm always amazed/impressed with the twists and turns that she's able to come up with. What a series!

I can't say enough about this series -- since I started them, I have read nothing else, and I'm sorry that the last one in the series (as of now) is next. If you read these, be sure to go in sequence from #1.

Excellent.

Another good one. Secrets and corruption and power. And ultimately forgiveness. Can Armand stop the cycle of corruption or will it be his undoing. Penney’s mysteries are always satisfying. They are well plotted and tied up at the end. This was had a twist I didn’t see coming.
