My Irish Literature tutor at Trinity College (a.k.a., Hot Scottish Tutor Peter Mackay, who hopefully is not reading this) said that this book would have made a better short story than it does a novel. While I enjoyed McGahern's simple, unflashy prose, I'm inclined to agree. The story covers the same ground again and again, and while the monotony of Moran's life may be part of the point, it doesn't make for the most enjoyable read.

There isn't really a plot in the book, it's more about setting and character. McGahern does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere that hangs heavy over the whole book.

This book probably just wasn't for me. It was so slow and descriptive that I almost gave up many times, but I didn't give it 1/5 stars because I still grew attached to the characters.

I read this a long time ago as part of a Celtic Studies course during my B.A. It's a terrific book of the so-depressing-you-may-want-to-slit-your-wrists-afterwards variety.

Hit close to home. Hard to get into because the names of characters were confusing.
