The stories in this book don't come across as altogether "polished", but somehow, that doesn't make them any less brilliant than they are. The collection overall is a mixed bag - some stories read like complete flash pieces, while others read more like fragments. Again, though, there's a cleverness in all of them, whether it's the description in a single line or an ironic ending. I don't know that I'd recommend it to someone who's never read Brautigan, but if you're looking for stories to read during a lunch break or collection to dip into here and there, you'll likely find a winner no matter what page you flip to.
A lovely set of short stories, some of them incredibly short. I've read so much Brautigan over the years that this collection seems to seep into my recollection of Brautigan, adding to themes such as rivers, living poor, loving women, travelling around America, drinking coffee, rather than standing alone as great works of fiction.
I loved it.
I loved it.
"He decided to take the plumbing out of his house and completely replace it with poetry, and so he did."
To read Brautigan is to take all that mental plumbing clogged up with shit and replace it with poetry!

Brautigan hits different. His stuff is not antiquated to 60's hippy culture but as fun and relevant as ever. Todays writers seem to have very little sense of whimsy.

Sort of micro or flash fiction. Meta. Autobiographical, but "Richard Brautigan" is as much a character as the author. References Trout Fishing in America a dozen times. As I get reacquainted with Brautigan I'm fascinated by the way he falls into a sort of "hippie misogyny" that feels almost comical in its over the top-ness. I reject it but don't want to stop reading him. There is something about the cringiness of some passages that make it feel dated, but also a time capsule. I don't know.
i'm writing this review at 4:28 am instead of sleeping THAT IS HOW MUCH I F***ING LOVED THIS.
Life altering writing from the original mind that brought you "In Watermelon Sugar" (FYI Harry Styles fans).
