I struggled a bit with this book, trying really hard to get into the world. It starts out pretty slow, and it was around page 100 when I was thinking that things are getting interesting now and we're gonna start having some adventures. Unfortunately, I was misled by January's narration and was instead stuck on her forced whimsy journey through a few doors. Not ten thousand. You go through more doors in Monsters Inc.

The narrative felt like it was trying way too hard to be poetic that I was often distracted by the words being used instead of just being able to focus on the story. I found the alternating storylines confusing as the voice used in both were way too similar. Yes, it all comes together and makes sense in the end, by by that point it was too little, too late. I was also disappointed by the ending, seeing as how everything was tied up so nicely with a beautiful bow that I felt no emotional catharsis at this journey that January just went on. For a book that just felt kinda sad and was full of yearning, the ending was a gift that failed its execution.

Unfortunately, I was not a fan of this book. But if book-within-a-book stories with portals to other worlds and a diverse cast are to your liking, you might light this one better than me.

Really enjoyed this view of alternate universes.

It took about half of the book for the pacing to pick up enough that I didn't want to put the book down. Plus the reveals in this were a bit predictable and some of the characters' choices made me want to throw the book at times. January was a little too passive of a protagonist for me for most of the book (I do think that was on purpose, but it drove me a little crazy). However, the second half was delightful, and I loved the theme of stories being doors into magical, new worlds (which, of course, they are).

I loved this book. It has magic, love, murder, mystery, and is just beautifully written. I was captivated from the very beginning and couldn't put it down. It reminded me of A Million Junes somehow, and yet was vastly different. I don't know why I don't know more people who have read this.

A love letter to novels

Loved this read. Compelling characters, high stakes, the fate of the world resting upon the power of the written word. Definitely recommend.
