A post-apocalyptic murder mystery to save the world.
🏝️
A fog swept the earth, killing everyone except for 122 villagers and three scientists who now live in harmony on a remote island, protected by the fog. The utopia doesn’t last for long because one of the scientists is murdered, but before that everyone’s memory was wiped by the security system. Now they have 107 hours to solve the murder before the fog will take over the island, ending humanity forever.

I’ve been putting off reading this one because I loved 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle that I worried it wouldn’t live up to that one. Unfortunately I was right. I didn’t love this the same way I loved his debut. I do love a good #dystopian #thriller but the pacing was off for a murder mystery. It was slow going for way too long before it began to pick up. It has conflicting reviews on GR too so maybe this one just was a miss, but I plan on reading Turton again.

Such a thrill ride and keeps you hooked.  The mystery is a tangle of webs, really well written. Keeps you guessing at every turn.

Ok idk what Stuart Turton puts in his books but i love all of them so much. The combination of a sci-fi fantasy genre novel with a detective style mystery works so well for him.

The world building is interesting, the characters have enough complexity to be interesting Without being flat, and the actual plots are so unique that it’s hard to think of anything similar.

Of his three books, I think this is possibly my least favorite, but that’s truly only because the other two are so good. This book is one that Id love to read again. It feels like a novel where you pick up new details with each read.

It’s also interesting, bc much like Emery, you end the book with questions still unanswered, and yet the book doesn’t feel incomplete. It’s one of my favorite things he does with his stories.

He gives you enough to feel like the story is finished, but leaves enough open to where you keep thinking about the book long after you’ve completed it, musing over the things left unanswered.

I’m sure there are other authors in this genre, but as someone who reads a lot of Mysteries and fantasy, Turton is one of my favorites in both genres and is quickly solidifying himself as holding many of the books that make up my favorites of all time.

Just to editorialize one of the drop down answers: there IS character development, but not very strong imo

Ya know... I did enjoy the mystery and uncovering clues with Emory. I just didn't really like the characters very much. I wish I had more to say, but that's kinda it :(

Edited to add half a star. After a few days, I think I was quite nitpicky and I enjoyed this a bit more than I originally thought.

Kayt, if  you haven't finished it yet and you've uncovered this spoiler, I need you to really think if you want to open the next one lol

Also the ultimate explanation being pretty similar to Knives Out kinda takes a lot of joy out of the reveal.
