I'm conflicted on Turton because I feel like he's too smart and has too many ideas for his own good and I find myself peaking behind the curtain a little too often. Like I tend to get What He's Doing during certain scenes more than I enjoy reading them and going on the journey that the book wants to take me on.
Regardless, I'll keep reading his stuff cause I genuinely believe he's only going to get better as he keeps going and that excites me.
Actual reveal was a bit of a cop out, you sorta had to see it coming about half way through the book but I also think that was maybe part of the whole deal? Idk, I felt similar about the last book but I still very much enjoyed parsing the story out as I went along.

This was a pretty easy read but at the same time kept me guessing. I didn’t enjoy this as much as the Seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, but I did enjoy the concepts and the writing style.
Tbh it has a similar plot of the seven deaths with a mystery needing to be solved within a certain timeframe and someone who has lots of information not sharing it with the main characters.
I thought the futuristic setting of the book we pretty interesting and the concept of creating human like creatures to do all of the dirty work humans don’t want to do.
I felt like I didn’t really have a whole lot of respect for Niema with her experimenting on innocent humans, like I know she was trying to improve humanity but those people didn’t have a choice. Also who said she could just decide what was going to happen to all of humanity??
I enjoyed the short chapters and felt like it was an easily digestible book with some fun commentary on human kind.

This was bananas and I was totally down for it.
Stuart Turton's books are all completely different from each other. I never know what to expect, and I'm always delighted to tag along for the ride.
This time he's gone for a locked-island, post-apocalyptic, murder mystery, sci fi thriller.... as you do.
I'd struggle to summarise the plot. There's an island and it's the end of the world because global warming has summoned a swarm of shiny, fog-loving insects who gorge on human flesh - dooming mankind, except for this small pastoral community until OH NO! someone's been murdered and the insect cloud is coming to eat everybody and the only way to stop it is by offering up the murderer to the sentient voice in the islanders' heads that... YEAH YOU READ THAT RIGHT... could turn it off at will but nah, I've got instructions and also it's past all your bedtimes smol villagers...
It's easier to compare this to certain videogames I've played, than other literature. (This is a high compliment, Turton, if you're reading this - but I suspect you are an avid gamer too!)
Ridiculously complex and probably riddled with plot holes that I don't give a damn about, his latest offering is every bit as ambitious and bananas as his other ones.
His zeal as an author, chaos and enthusiasm as a story teller, and compulsive readability all come through once more and had me ordering an extra cup of tea because I couldn't tear my eyes from the pages and was about to get kicked out of my local café.
It's also a twisty, turny mystery, but don't even try to unpack it... just ride the waves towards a tense climax!
Stuart Turton continues to be an absolute fave, and he simply can't write fast enough for me! I'm insanely jealous of his exuberant, tangled, ideas-filled brain.
