It's a really great overview of the popular female characters. It lets you know who's who without having to scour the internet or read a million comics.

While I wish there’d been some X-Men ladies, I can’t deny that I spent most of my time reading this grinning and feeling just unbridled joy and motivation. This book is designed to lift up girls and it does that. I would have loved having this when I was young - but I had these characters, which is the point. Lovely ladies with art, histories, and humanity.

One thing I noticed was just how many of these women became heroes later in life. That’s something I really needed to see as I am in the pursuit of a job that will take me longer to achieve than the average 4 year degree - but that doesn’t make it any less important. Hero at 18, 22, 26, 35, or beyond, you are still a hero. Your worth has no time limit.

One important thing up front: This book is about the women in the Marvel (Comic Book) Universe, not the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Yes, some of the ladies, including most of those on the cover, also appear in the MCU but their cinematic origin stories often differ greatly from the original comic books - and those are the ones this book is about.

This also is the one point I wished the book would have handled differently: Add just a little information on how these heroines are portrayed in the movies and how their movie-selves differ from the comic book originals.

Oh, and one other thing: There are no X-Men characters in here. Might be because Marvel Press is an imprint of the Disney Book Group and there were some licencing issues? Might be because none of them made the cut the be one of the 65 Marvel women portraied in this book? Honestly, the first one is probably more likely but it really could be anything.

So apart from those things: I LOVED Powers of a Girl ♥ Loved, loved, loved it. The girls and women portrayed by Lorraine Cink and illustrated by the amazing Alice X. Zhang (whom I knew from her stunning Doctor Who comic book covers) are a really diverse bunch: The collection highlights a lot of WoC, from Latina America Chavez over Korean-American Silk to Black girl genius Moon Girl. There are heroines of all ages and backgrounds in here, and … well, okay, I do have another problem with this book: the overall queerness factor is pretty lacking. It's not non-existing, as some things, like America's relationship with Lisa Halloran, are mentioned, but apart from that? It's kind of disappointing.

I'm not quite sure about the actually intended target audience - some of the comments seem to be directed at kids, the tone more towards teens - but I can honestly say, that I liked the tone and style of the book. Then again, I do love Gwenpool and that might have been quite helpful to enjoy the conversational tone Cink employs. She also manages a great balance between basic character information and in depth background infos and somehow makes even the more convoluted comic origin stories understandable. Still, I'd say you'd need at least a basic understanding of the Marvel Universe to fully appreciate this book. Although, the illustrations by Alice X. Zhang, both the bigger full portraits and the smaller, more sketch-like character studies, can and should be enjoyed by anyone - they are GORGEOUS!

My best friend bought this for my marvel obsessed daughter for Christmas (kind of a present for me too since I’m just as obsessed) and the artwork and stories inside were so gorgeous. It really is a beautiful book that has a lot of great background info on our fave female marvel superheroes!

I really enjoyed, although I found it a bit difficult. I guess the fact that English is not my first language made it a little bit harder because of the very informal language. Other than that, it is a very nice book to get introduced to the whole word of this amazing superheroes.

Thank you to @scholastic_au for sending me a copy of this one for review. I absolutely loved this one, i enjoyed learning about the different Marvel females. My knowledge of Marvel has mostly been from the movies and i know there is alot more characters in the comics so it was cool to learn more about them and some of the histories of the characters I did know. I enjoyed the way the author wrote about each character, it flowed well and has me wanting to go and read some of the comics to find out more. I loved the messages that came through each characters story. The illustrations in the book are gorgeous, they would look amazing framed on my wall. Overall an enjoyable read and one i would recommend for lovers of the marvel universe.

So I absolutely loved this read!
I’m a grown adult, but I’d say the target audience is probably children from age 10 upwards? Not much younger, but yeah.

It’s based on the comic characters only, which was a pleasant surprise to me, seeing as this was a gift.
It gives a fantastic overview of many female heroes in the Marvel universe and besides being written very entertaining it also features fantastic illustrations.

Absolute recommendation from me!

Great book, should be a five star, but the tone and the attempt by the writer to seem "hip" and "cool" made me cringe so much while I read this book. The information is excellent, the diversity of characters gives a great overview of some of the amazing girls and women of the Marvel universe.

Just fix the language please. You don't have to pretend to be talking to a 10 year old to attract an audience to this book. Marvel fans have been waiting for these amazing ladies to get a chance in the spotlight.

This was such a fun read and the illustrations were amazing! I got this to put in my classroom library, but I’m also such a big marvel fan. It was great to see so many female characters get light shown on them!
