I loved this!! I feel like she shares a lot of Barbara Kingsolver's remarkable writing strengths, but with more subtlety. This is not a dig on Kingsolver or saying that she lacks it, just saying I think Erdrich may have even more of it. This is only my second Erdrich book, though. Would love to read more but I may be too faint of heart for the more grim, murdery ones that she got all the awards for. But her last two novels were right up my alley. There's grim stuff in them, too, but she really covers the whole range, including plenty of wonderful humor.

I don’t know if it’s good or bad that this was my first Louise Erdrich book. It seems a lot of her regular readers feel let down by this story but because I have nothing to compare it to, I enjoyed it.

The story focuses on a group of residents in a small North Dakota town. Young love, bad decisions, work, marriage, and bigotry are just some of the issues the author deals with.

Although it’s not an all-time favorite, it’s a book worthy of attention. It is a slow-burn that really takes off in the last third of the book.
