tbh i think that i would have loved following any of these characters, but (potentially more about me in this particular political moment than the book) it just felt like too much to really follow all of them. i couldn't absorb myself into the story because i was tracking so much.

I was pretty engaged for the first 3/4 but then I felt it dragged and I had a harder time with the characters' bad choices and passivity. There was a mysterious incident that doesn't fully get explained into quite far into the book and by then it felt a little anticlimactic. I liked the ending though.

Erdrich’s writing is of course impeccable. And I was drawn in to the narrative right off the bat. But about 2/3 of the way in, through the end, it felt like a lot of loose ends were left simply hanging. The book wove a couple of plot lines and themes but to me, they simply never came together in a coherent or meaningful way. I wanted to like this one more but in the end it was good, not amazing.
