I’m counting this as read even though I did not finish since I put in a lot of time and read to 60%. Once the bull fiasco began, my interest level dropped, boredom sent in, and I was skimming like crazy.
I didn’t care for Callie’s characterization as a woman with no sense of confidence in any form.
Needless to say, I was disappointed as this was my first Kinsale.

Never a dull moment. With a shy heroine who hides a wickedly adventurous personality behind her seeming dullness. And while the hero is clearly a rogue, he is a warm hearted one. The whole cast of side characters was enjoyable and well written, including the bull! The baby epilogue is actually a calf epilogue this time.
Wonderful narration.

I'm only about a third of the way through, but I'm going to put this one aside for now. Nicholas Boulton's narration is superb, so that's not the issue. I somehow got the impression this book had more humor, and while the clever banter is enjoyable, this book has so much longing and melancholy that I don't think I can continue for now. I didn't realize Callie would consider to become engaged to her former suitor, and that feels....just stressful to listen to. It's 2020 after all, and more melancholy isn't appealing right now. I may try to pick this up in print so I can skim. Once I know the story, I'll probably enjoy listening to it more.

Lessons in French is my first Laura Kinsale read.

The storytelling was too expository for my taste, which included pages of internal musings from the hero/heroine. The romance was complimented by witty exchanges and sweet words, but overall, it was overdrawn with misunderstandings, unspoken thoughts, and circuitous behavior.

One of my favorite romantic tropes is lovers reunited after years apart, which was a lovely underpinning to Lessons in French, keeping my interest through the end of the story.
