Is it a bad book? Yeah. Is Twilight terrible as a whole, more so now than when I was younger? Oh yeah. Was Edward insufferable, angsty, and unintentionally hilarious at times? Definitely. Did I still enjoy it? Absolutely.

This book is a Twilight retelling from Edward's perspective. It is told in first person. Edward is a vampire who is part of a vampire family who get their sustenance from animal blood instead of human blood. They are not a family by blood, but by their shared desire to not harm humans. To pass as human, Edward and his sisters and brothers attend a local high school. Early in the book, Bella, a teen girl, moves into town (Forks, Washington) to stay with her father who is the local sheriff. Bella starts as a student at the high school that Edward and his siblings also attend. When Bella joins a class that Edward is in, Edward has a strong reaction to the aroma of Bella's blood. It triggers an intense hunger reflex in him. The story goes on from there. I read and loved the Twilight books and movies when they came out. I recognized that they weren't the most well written books. Despite this, I found them very entertaining. I enjoyed the first half of Midnight Sun fairly well. Then Edward took Bella to a field in the wilderness to show her an aspect of vampires. This part of the story almost put me to sleep. I mean this literally. I had trouble keeping my eyes open. There was so much poorly written dialog. And the dialog kept on going and going. I had difficulty getting through the rest of the book. When Edward and Bella weren't endlessly talking in cringey dialog, we read what Edward was thinking. What he was thinking a lot of the time is what an awful being he was. I can't recall ever reading a character who was as self-loathing as Edward. There is actually a decent story in this book. But there is not 662 pages (the length of the book) of story. The premise of a different type vampires is clever. I liked the characters and their variety, both the vampires and the humans in Edwards and Bella's orbit. The plot is decent. A lot of the dialog and Edwards inner monologue should have been cut out. The other issue is that most people who read this book have previously read Twilight. I knew generally what was going to happen. I can only recommend this book to people who read Twilight recently and liked it. They would be okay with the poor writing. And to people who know nothing of Twilight. There would be a lot of thrills for the second group. They wouldn't know what was going to happen. Perhaps they could overlook the poor writing.

This book is great for a laugh, if you read it with the right attitude (that attitude being making fun of hundred year old loser edward cullen). This is truly psychopathic shit. Not only do we get a detailed recap of all the psychopathic behavior from the original books, we also get insight into Edward’s misogynistic and murderous thoughts. Like bro spent half of his time planning murders and the other half barely restraining himself from committing them. Also this book just solidified for me the fact that edward would’ve never fallen for Bella if he could hear her thoughts. Her internal monologue is everything he despises about anyone else’s thoughts. I also feel like it can’t be stressed enough that he literally stalks her!!!!! He breaks into her room while she’s sleeping and justifies it by killing a spider??? my guy get it together. And while we’re here, i just want to say that i have a hate-based parasocial relationship with stephenie meyer for how dirty she did rosalie. i will never forgive the misogyny that rosalie has been built around. when she could’ve been such an incredible character!!! this book is unhinged in the worst way imaginable. (emmett sweetheart this has nothing to do with you, you’re lovely)

Midnight Sun is not what I would call a great book, but it is a fascinating one. If you can get past all of Edward's self-loathing and inability to do anything right (which is extremely hard), there are a few interesting tidbits to mull over. I think one of my main gripes with the Twilight saga in general is that every now and then Meyer touches on something compelling and then zooms right past it for the angsty romance factors.
- Edward's relationship to Rosalie is so strange and captivating. He loathes her, but he thinks about her the most out of all his family members. Obviously, Rosalie was Bella's foil in the main series, but I never gave much thought to how that impacted Edward's perspective of her.
- The deeper depiction and explanations of Alice and Jasper's abilties were cool.
- I despise the way Edward's mind-reading is depicted. I think it falls into many of the pitfalls that make me dislike most mind-reading characters. The apathy, the loathing for what people think in the privacy of their own heads, the lack of any personal ethics, the fact that he is not impacted at all beyond annoyance... that's a little too flat and Christian for my mind-reading opinions. That said, there is a great moment where Edward uses Emmett and Jasper's minds as his rearview mirrors. This is the ONLY good thing Meyer wrote about Edward's mind-reading.
But those things aside, this book is a slog. Edward's angst is overwrought and hard to read. Add in the Cullens' holier-than-thou vibes and it's just. none of the fun that vampires usually are.

-i also liked this book in the series it was good i do wish i would've read this right before or after i read twilight but instead i read them in the order of there publication dates you still can read them based of the years they released i just personally would've found it better if i read midnight sun before or after i read twilight overall i did enjoy this book i loved how we finally got a look into Edwards pov i was happy that i got a understanding of his mind and how he thought and what he heard of others thoughts it made me feel a better understanding therefore i could enjoy his character allot i was always team Jacob but after these books it will always be team Edward for me i love this whole series i always watched the twilight series movies and enjoyed it but reading the books i enjoyed these characters more and now that the book series is over for me i honestly miss Edward and Bella like there real people overall i rated this book five stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-

Even though I’ve read Twilight and knew what was going to happen, this was enough of a new book that I thoroughly enjoyed all 817 pages. You do get stuck in Edward's head a lot which made me flip back to see if this was something that was actually happening or just in his thoughts or Alice’s predictions. But being able to read this story from Edward’s POV was very entertaining and I loved it.
