A really cool premise: a global race to defeat an all-powering oppressive governmental force told from multiple perspectives of three witches all with unique powers.
There are 3 types of witches: Elemental witches (the most dangerous), Crystal witches (who access their powers through - you guessed it! - crystals and jewelry), and Kitchen witches (who use everyday items you would find in a kitchen to perform spells). I was super intrigued by this! Yet the AUDACITY of some of the men in this book was too much for me. I read to escape, not to experience things that happen when I walk down the street.
Graphic: Misogyny and Violence

The novel started with an interesting premise, lots of things were going wrong for different characters in mysterious circumstances. But after the initial few chapters the excitement stops. What follows is a very clunky narrative, packed full of exposition and adverbs. An example: instead of "she said" it was always "she said sadly/happily/slowly/calmly/angrily". This is fine every now and then, but the constant use of adverbs to tell the reader how someone is feeling is poor writing! Show me how they feel in their expression, their words, their body languageādon't use adverbs as a replacement for this!
The characters also seemed interesting to start, I liked that it followed a dad and daughter, as well as an 'older' woman (she was 40 lol), rather than your stereotypical girlboss 16-year old. However, these characters quickly became so boring! It was a shame to see the 19-year-old daughter written as a spoiled, moody teenager. It would've worked had she been 14, but 19 is literally adult age, so it didn't work at all.
Plot-wise it didn't get much better. It had potential but it was bogged down by too many weak characters and location jumps. And the epilogue? Idek what to say. It reminds me of Vox, with the way that the author intends for it to be feminist, but it entirely misses the point of feminism. Men helped to save the day at crucial points of the book's plot, without much explanation as to why they did vs why the women didn't. The villains were caricatures, although I'd go as far to say all the characters were.
If you're on the hunt for good books about witches, I'd strongly recommend The Once and Future Witches, my review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
