I wanted to like this book, but it just wasn't happening. I never connected with any of the characters in Angelfall. They were all completely without personality, except for those random characters given quirks in place of personalities (i.e., Fred and George--oops, sorry, I meant Dee and Dum). The entire legion of angels are portrayed as mindless nazis with wings, complete with bizarre genetic experimentation and whatever the heck you would call what they did to the children. Why are there angel scientists in the first place? The mythology makes no sense at all. We never get even a glimpse of why creatures depicted as having so many human characteristics--personality, language, appearance, sexual compatibility--would so casually kill all the humans. Oh, except for the ones they play with.

And don't get me started on the non-ending. Is it some sort of requirement these days that all YA books must be part of a trilogy? Have some respect for the reader and make each book a complete story of its own! Imagine if the Hunger Games had ended after Katniss got injured in the fire in the arena. That's what this ending felt like.

After seeing so many great reviews of this book, I was eager to read it. It's my favorite genre, and had an interesting premise. It did keep me turning pages to find out what happened next, but as the story went on, it just seemed to go further off the rails. Since it didn't have an ending, I think I will skip reading any more of the series and just imagine that they all died.

2023:

If you like stories set in a post-apocalyptic world where angels have descended to not save humanity but destroy it then you'll love this book.

The book essentially follows Penryn as she struggles to survive in this horror film come to reality with a mother that speaks to devils in her sleep and a wheelchair-bound sister.

One night, her sister gets ripped out of her hands and she's left with nothing but a wingless angel halfway to death and decides to use him to get back to her sister.

It was a lot better than I expected! As the book went on, it really picked up, and I'm glad I stuck to it in the end. In hindsight, it was quite tense the whole time and the author was great in not letting the tension slip. Halfway through I found Penryn a bit dry and I wasn't very into the universe (
Spoilermostly I was kind of having difficulty getting into the angels being so modern and... normal
, but the ending was exciting and I really am looking forward to reading the next book!

I think this book was not written for me. I've been trying to get more into sci-fi/fantasy, especially written by WOC, which is why I tried reading this book. However, this felt squarely in the Twilight genre, with more emphasis on the paranormal romance than the sci-fi/fantasy. The premise was intriguing, but so little was explained that it felt hollow and unsatisfying, and the writing was juvenile enough that I'm not interested in reading the sequel for answers... However, it was a quick and entertaining read, and I would recommend it to younger people and/or those who really like Twilight.
