The biggest disservice to this book was that it was given the description of a "ghost story." It is not what most people would consider to be a literal ghost story. But it is haunting. :) I loved this book. I read Setterfield's The 13th Tale and also loved that book. Her same eloquent writing is evident here. This is not a mystery or ghost story or a thriller or any sort. It's story about mortality - not death, exactly - just mortality. All the characters were beautifully written and I felt as if I knew them. I don't think this is a book that everyone will love as much I do, but having the proper expectation will help.

Lovely...simply lovely. When an author writes so well that she cradles you in the story like this, it is like falling in love. Time stood still for me whenever I read this. Artistry with words is just a beautiful as any painting, and Setterfield has the skill of Monet, with her soft phrasing and moody atmospheres. Gothic without too much darkness, romantic without too much light, this is storytelling at its finest.
Although I LOVE Setterfield, this one did not catch me as much as her other. I would love to discuss it though - that might help! :)
