disappointing. i LOVED The Thirteenth Tale and was anticipating this follow up for awhile. i may not have been as disappointed if it weren't referred to as a ghost story. there was very little suspense and practically no spookiness. i will read her next one, though and hope to enjoy it as much as her first.

This was an exceptional read from beginning to end. The author's writing style was precise, detailed, thought-provoking, and magnetic. The characters were interesting and layered. I loved the uniqueness of the story and quite enjoyed how it played out. There was a bit of the familiar combined with a bit of the dark and mysterious, which made for great content. I would highly recommend this book. It is a keeper and a very definite hard copy-for-your-library kind of book.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The words I have expressed are my own.

Certainly not as wonderful as The Thirteenth Tale, one of my favorite books. Enjoyable, but too long.

Really disappointing. Slow story that never reached the excitement or interest level that I hoped for. I had loved her last book (The Thirteenth Tale) and this one just didn't deliver.

Dark, mysterious, and centred around death, this novel follows the story of William Bellman.
As a child, William makes the choice to kill a rook. This choice has, or is insinuated to have, consequences for him and others around him for the rest of his life. It follows him in the shape of death, or perhaps in the shape of a man. A curse? Or coincidences? The reader decides.
A thought-provoking novel.

As many others have said, this book was a disappointment after the 13th tale. So sad because I had long awaited another book by this author. I liked this book in the beginning but then everyone started dying and it just got sad. I do like the author's style, I just wish the subject matter had been a bit more enjoyable.
