Wow. the language used by the author is just… left me speechless. It’s very beautifully descriptive and gives off mysterious vibe. Sometimes it was hard to follow, but it aligns perfectly with the setting.

I was emersed in the story and couldn’t put the book away. I could heavily relate to overworking William, who had lost his basic human senses. I was shocked by the amount of deaths present in his life, especially those that took life of people precious to him. I was frightened by every part where the rook appeared.

In the end, it’s a story everyone interprets in their own way. But I believe one of the main messages the author is trying to tell us is not to commit any great mistakes we will regret in the future.

I debated even reading this book - I loved "The Thirteenth Tale" but the reviews for B&B not been great. Amazon had it on sale for $2 (not usually a great sign), so I picked it up. I really enjoy Setterfield's writing style, but there wasn't any payoff here. Writing along doesn't make up for a lack of plot. There was build up to not much of anything.

It wasn't terrible - but it could have been so much more.

I loved Ms. Setterfield's writing in The Thirteenth Tale, and this novel did not disappoint. It was a beautiful - and fascinating - ghost story... and by "beautiful" I don't mean the typical definition. I mean that it inspired awe, interested me, and made me want to keep reading just for the gorgeousness of the prose. The story itself was interesting too, and I found myself cheering the protagonist on... even if he was somewhat an antithesis of a hero at some points in the story.

Well done, Ms. Setterfield, for drawing yet another Gothic but wonderful ghost story. I will definitely be on the lookout for more novels of yours.

Many thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for an opportunity to read and review this novel!!

Not as good as The Thirteenth Tale. interesting main character though.
