This book took me on a whirlwind of emotions. The story line draws you in but the characters hold you there. I am truly caught up in Autmn, Wes, Conner and Ruby.
3.5 stars, rounding up.
Four stars for:
-making me a sucker for melodramatic angst. Emma Scott, you win!!
-Poetry that I really enjoyed (Don't know if it came from Cyrano de Bergerac, I've never read it.)
-making me invested in track meets and races!
-making neither guy completely good or bad. The gray areas make them more human and their situation all the more difficult to resolve.
-Weston's impulses to treat Autumn *right* while also lying to her. (Do I love or hate this guy??)
Three stars for:
-Soooo much of Weston's tragic dad-leaving-him past. Yes, it was a truly awful thing for a kid to go through. But...please move forward, for the sake of the story.
-Connor and Weston's co-dependency
-Weston's self-sabotage
-Autumn's meh personality (esp. vague passion to save the world despite inability to pick a cause, requiring any love interest to jump through hoops to woo you with romance)
-Ruby's pushy-best-friend personality. Although Ruby had plenty more personality than Autumn, the Extroverted Best Friend that crops up in so many stories really rubs me the wrong way (perhaps I've had too many of these people in my own life). Leave Autumn and her private love life the F alone, and mind your damn biz.
-RANDOM joining of the army at 80% through the story
*Note, this is a duology, and I have not read the 2nd book. But the first ended with a pretty big cliffhanger, and since I'm unfamiliar with the source material, I don't know what to expect! But I'll definitely pick it up to see how it could possibly resolve.
Recommended if you can ignore the above negatives in order to marinate in the delicious angst.

“I have loved you with both
Hands tied behind my back
Bound with pen and ink
Paper and words
Sealed with someone else’s name
until this moment
in which I am nothing
but a man
who loves a woman.
There is nothing left to say
Except to give
all of my heart
For you”

oh so frustrating.... I am not a fan of timidity and Heroine sleeping with someone who is not the hero.
Still I will read the follow up

Autumn, my love, you deserve better than these two eggheads

Ughhh god, I'm a SUCKER for an angsty love triangle. Is this the best book I've ever read? No. Did I EAT the entire thing up in one sitting? Absolutely.
The plot is a tad bit all over the place, a little 0-100 in parts. So much frustration with the characters and their choices, but you can understand and excuse it. Weston's feelings for Autumn were a tad too insta-lovey at first. But you can definitely feel a genuine connection between them, and feel their chemistry. And the ANGST. The yearningggg

It should be said that I am not typically a fan of love triangles. Apparently, the exception to that is Emma Scott's because holy hell, her ability to pull you into the lives of her characters is so amazing that you can't help but to read until there is no more.
As this is a duet, it ends with a cliffhanger. One that goes with a twist that I honestly didn't expect.
Connor is the type of guy that seems like he lives a charmed life, and not merely because of his money and privilege. He has a knack for bringing out the best in people, making them smile and laugh, and just feel comfortable. Unfortunately, he fails to see that as being valuable.
Weston is the opposite of Connor, rough and tumble, poor, broken, unsociable. He pushes everyone away, not seeing the value in what HE has to offer. A "Southie" with a way with words, he is selfless and good, hardworking and loyal.
Then, the third part of the triangle, who doesn't realize the part that she plays... Autumn. I didn't necessarily feel that she was quite as fleshed-out. She's both strong and vulnerable at once, prideful and humble...
The interactions between the three are well worth a read. For those wondering, this isn't especially erotic, but definitely romantic. It is told from Weston and Autumn's POVs and breezes over 99% of the sex.

I really didn’t like this book, and most of that comes down to the FMC. She’s completely fixated on whether the guy is romantic enough, as if that’s the only thing that matters in a relationship, while ignoring everything else. What frustrated me even more was how she couldn’t see the obvious differences between how he behaves in person and through messages. Somehow, that’s enough for her to give him another chance, and honestly, it just felt ridiculous and made her come across as naive and, frankly, a bit foolish. It was really hard to connect or sympathize with her character because of that.
I dnfed it eventually.
