I have very mixed emotions on this one. The pace and plotting were good, and I liked the road brushstrokes of the characters, but the character building was painful to read. The main character’s nemesis, for example, is such an overt sexist bully that it almost seems like parody. I’ve read many great portrayals of female characters by male authors, but I was pulled out of the story multiple times by the jarring thought that this was clearly written by a man who thinks he understands how women feel. Then again, his portrayal of some of the men is equally clunky, so perhaps it’s just a matter of lack of subtlety.

The good thing about this story is that it kept me guessing for about 75% of the book. After that, I was quite certain who the mastermind was. The investigation is fast-paced, the characters are multidimensional, and the plot is good. With every part, something new is unearthed by the team and I found myself reading ahead by a few pages to find out what happens and then going back to read each sentence properly to get a proper mental picture. I wanted to read more about Kikuta but there isn't much about him in this book.

Spoiler ahead!

That said, I'm not too happy about the ending. I wanted Reiko to be the one who discovered the villain and felt let down by the conclusion. Still trying to process the story and comparing it with the movie adaptation from 2010. It's titled Strawberry Night and if you want to watch it, you can easily find one with English subtitles. The movie plot follows that of the book closely but with some changes as well. I didn't like that they put Kikuta on desk duty throughout the movie (what was that all about?). I also didn't like that they made Katsumata look like some good ol' lone ranger type. In the book, he is a vile, sexist, dirty cop who tries to outsmart Reiko at every turn using foul means. His internal monologue in the book really riled me up.

They didn't highlight the tension between Ioka, Kikuta, and Reiko as well. Ioka is a funny character in the book. He declares his love for Reiko every few minutes and this riles up Kikuta who has feelings for her but is unable to express himself clearly. I'm gonna watch the tv drama series from 2012 and see where the story goes.

Schade.

I'm not sure if it was the translation or the original writing, but there was a lot to be desired in this novel. The concepts were great, but the execution was lacking - severely at certain points. I'm also not sold on the female detective whom every single male is apparently in love with, or her backstory as a rape survivor by a stranger sex assault. It just seems very contrived in order to prop up a character that is otherwise fairly one-dimensional and frankly annoying, which is extra disappointing because she could have been a much more robust and fascinating character given that she achieved her rank young, is an exceptional detective: all this despite the rampant sexism and harassment in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. But I'm just not buying it. I also think that, specifically, some of the insults didn't translate well from Japanese to English, making what were likely supposed to be scathing and horrifying exchanges kind of toothless and funny. For example, I don't think someone would call another person "dumbo" and actually expect an emotional response other than confusion or laughter, so the translator could probably have taken liberties here to make it more impactful and on par with what, undoubtedly, the original text was trying to achieve.

It's unfortunate though because the actual case was unique and interesting despite following a familiar formula, and could have been far better. I assume in the original Japanese the book was far more compelling seeing as it's been adapted for television and is a bestseller.

Still, I'll read the second book as I'm curious to see if anything improves.

It was an easy read, but uninspiring. The ends seemed too loosely connected.
