This is my best friend’s favorite book. It was a chore to get through and not my cup of tea at all. Boo.

Not quite a 4 star, but very, very close. It was hard to put down.

This is an excellent beginning for this author. The characters are vivid and I can almost hear the stream in the background as the children play outside the church. Fast read with characters that quickly draw you in. I would recommend this to anybody!

A dark and sad story that is also a story of love and redemption. The turns in the story, the characters and the atmosphere were all perfect. I was pulled into this book from the start. Mr. Cash does not tell a feel good story, but he does tell one that pulls out thought and emotion.

Mark 16:17-18

Something has spoken to me in the night...and told me I shall die, I know not where. Saying:
"[Death is] to lose the earth you know, for greater knowing; to lose the life you have, for greater life; to leave the friends you loved, for greater loving; to find a land more kind than home, more large than earth." - Thomas Wolfe, You Can't Go Home Again

You just show me a Christian woman up here, and I'll show you a woman who knows what to pick and where to find it. If you don't know how to heal yourself, then you don't know how to live when times are hard.

(looking in mirror) Same old thing as always: gray hair, white belly, scrawny arms.

Excellent book that is hauntingly emotional, but well worth the read. Written by an author from Western North Carolina and set in Madison County. The book had an unusual style of writing that I enjoyed.

I loved this story, the story line flowed even though the chapters jumped between characters. While the was ending predictable I was sad to finish the book. It left me with a mix of melancholy and thankfulness.
