Sophie Hannah is a master of the psychological thriller, and Little Face is no exception. Her plots are carefully constructed, and Hannah employs her usual technique of alternating the point of view between characters. Sometimes I think that all the characters in Hannah’s books, including the detectives, are insane, but somehow this just adds to the atmosphere and the fun. You can bet with Hannah that the ending will be thrilling.

Little Face keeps the reader guessing who is telling the truth and who is lying or maybe even a bit unhinged in a dysfunctional and controlling family. Alice is a new mother that goes out for the first time shortly after her daughter’s birth, only to come back to find that the door is unlocked and her sleeping husband has left their child unattended. Alice swears that her baby has been replaced by a stranger’s baby and frantically calls the police. Everything doesn’t add up as the story unfolds – her husband’s ex-wife was brutally murdered, her mother-in-law is extremely controlling, and her husband shows a dark, sadistic side toward her after her daughter’s “disappearance.” The story is told from a number of characters’ perspectives, piecing together the puzzle disjointedly to maintain suspense.

My only issue with this book was the with the level of sadism that Alice put up with from her husband under her mother-in-law’s roof. It was had to read passages where she was made into such a helpless victim where she should have felt the safest.

I felt quite used by the character in this book, and, as a result, quite used by the author. I'm on the fence about whether this is a good thing!

Me gustó mucho. Es bien entretenido e interesante, con un ritmo fluido y que te mantiente deseando saber en qué terminará la historia.

Lo recomiendo mucho, y definitivamente leeré otros más de ella.

For all the things I liked -- the structure, some of the phrasing, the setup -- this book didn't really deliver in the end. It was fairly predictable. The lead character was very difficult to sympathize with, and the author didn't seem to know what she wanted to do with Charlie and Simon. It reads very much like a first novel, and I'm glad that the writing improved for future outcomes.

Having now read three of her books, I think she's due for a first-person character who isn't a damaged, desperate woman that no one will believe.
