How do you solve a crime, when there doesn’t seem to have been a crime committed? Lord Wimsey attempts to solve the mystery of an old lady dying of (seemingly) natural causes! I did not expect the ending and this book was less long-winded than others she has written.

One thing I have to note that I can’t agree with in Dorothy Sayers’ books are the tones of anti-Semitism and racism against people of colour, which must have been common in 1930’s Europe.

So, it took me putting this book down like 3 times til I finally finished.

And man, was this sad. Comparing cause I have to (since I'm currently reading a bunch of Agatga Christie), I definitely prefer Miss Marple to Lord Peter. I like his activeness, his rambling speeches, but Miss Marple trumps him. Plus her mysteries are less horrific. While murder is convulted, this serious adds another layer of twisted madness. This is only book 3!! I shouldn't be this scarred!!
This, I believe ends my Peter Wimsey journey, short tho it was. I will move on to Hercule Poirot and be happy.

Not as strong as the first two for me. But Miss Climpson makes her debut(!!)

2021 - oh boy, the racism on display is ugly. This mystery is elaborately convoluted, and so entertaining as we see multiple investigations happening. The best part may be the introduction of Miss Climpson (!) who I think I love more than ever.

In any series there will be a favourite and a least favourite, and this book is perhaps my least favourite of the Peter Wimsey novels. Though still very good this one is less engaging as a novel and more of a sensationalist thriller and murder mystery than the others in the series. Notable in this one is that it introduces the moral problem for the amateur detective - when is it wise to meddle in affairs of murder? - and that it introduces the character of Miss Climpson, one of Sayers many highly memorable female characters.

My first Dorothy Sayers book! I've been meaning to give her a try for years. This was very much an "Agatha Christie meets P.G. Wodehouse" approach, which I enjoyed but was not as enthralled by as I expected to be. Little heavy on the snobbery, even in jest, mayhap? Part of it is the audiobook narrator, who has a slight lisp to his voice that grates on the nerves a little. I'm trying another Lord Peter Wimsey book to see how I feel after a larger sampling.

Sayers is amazing, but....

"Wealthy people don't inspire trust."

"Such a nice word - ruffled - like a kitten, I always think - so furry and nice."
