This is a pretty interesting mystery, because there doesn't seem to be one. An elderly cancer patient projected to live six months dies after three days. The doctor orders a post-mortem but nothing incriminating is found. The suspect is the woman's niece, but as she was due to inherit everything anyway, why bother killing a woman who was bound to die anyway? But Lord Peter Wimsey whimsically follows his instinct and finds the dark truths that surround the case. I liked this story because of its unusual premise and excellent construction, but I really wish we'd seen more of Bunter, who is almost completely replaced by Mr Parker in this book.

Dorothy’s first huge bummer ending. Also, Peter really is on some next level shit in this book. Hubris…he had too much fun and so had to suffer for it
Whilst the first Peter Wimsey mystery really put me off and had a weirdly contrived plot, the second book in the series was better, and this (the third) better still. Our master detective now has a human side to him and the case has a complex interplay of motives and ethics.
This one kind of just played in the background while I worked or played Sims. I could follow the basics of the plot, but it didn’t hold my interest as well as the first two. Probably because Peter declared the murderer straight off so the only real question was the “how”. (Which, weirdly enough, I predicted.)
Still fun, and I still love the characters.
Finally, an awesome book, one that's worth reading! :D
2021:
Reread via audio. I’m really enjoying revisiting this series as audiobooks. This one makes use of lots of letters, adds in some great supporting characters (though not much from Bunter) and is a delightfully clever mystery.
2011:
My favorite Lord Peter book so far! I couldn't put this one down. It was the perfect mix of mystery, suspense, wit, and of course, murder. Lord Peter is such an endearing character, and his supporting cast was wonderful in this book.

Probably one of the weaker Sayers books; the mystery isn't that interesting, and most of the extended cast either barely show up, or don't show up at all. In some ways, memorable only due to the introduction of Miss Climpson.
Also, very dated in both race and gender- you can definitely tell this was published in 1927.

The series is very much a Batman and Alfred type of story. Lord Peter is the crime fighting, spoiled guy, and Bunter is the obvious valet/butler. But that’s what makes this so great!!
Bunter is amazing, he can do so much and you don’t expect it. Lord Peter gets in trouble and has no idea how to spend all his money and it’s glorious. They truly care about each other, and solve every crime. They use fingerprints [something new in that time] and think outside the box. They keep you wanting to read more and more!
I love it when a detective is done right and keeps you wondering throughout who did it, and this one definitely did that for me. I hadn’t guessed the ending at all!
The books aren’t greatly written, by all means, but the Lord Peter series are definitely just as good as the Poirot series. And if I recommend you to start any detective series, Lord Peter would be on top of my list.
