ahhhh idk, i’m confused how i feel. the sensationalism behind the title, “sociopath” is not dissimilar to the stereotypes that underpin the misunderstood nature of sociopathy in general, which the author talks about a lot. at the same time, i don’t know enough about the dsm-v to say whether her explanation or interpretations are wrong, if at all. the memoir itself was compelling because well, who doesn’t want to see someone bare their dirty secrets, like stalking and joyrides in “stolen” cars? for whatever reason tho, this was a fairly quick read with the constant ping of discernment like a gps radar in the back of my mind.

while she didn’t feel emotions , i felt them many more than i expected when i read this. For a modern memoir it had the ability to keep me engaged throughout. To see the point of view of someone who lives their life with apathy; well it certainly makes you have a more empathetic outlook.

A personal and open account of life as a sociopath, Patric shares her story in an often compelling and gripping manner.

I don’t read autobiography often, so I was delightfully surprised by the books occasional ability to enthrall me in story.

I rate it 4 stars because this book often goes on tangents explaining psychology to the audience, or breaking the immersion with anecdotes about the publishing of the book. It came off to me as practicing her arguments for the APA about why sociopathy should be a separate diagnosis in the DSM.
