The last 43 pages of this book blew me away. It was a soft 3 stars until Rorschach. But damn. Sociopaths are people too. And everyone’s got something, and everyone’s faced with others projections, and everyone’s got work to do. This memoir is a beautiful feat - the awareness, the knowledge, the resources, the bravery!

“I was already underwater before I remembered I’d forgotten to breathe. A feeling I realized that had long ago become my baseline”

I read this so fast—for one: I borrowed the audiobook on Libby and really enjoyed the author’s voice. She’s a fantastic reader for someone who struggles to convey feeling.

Secondly, this is the exact reason I love memoirs—we get to read the life and story of a sociopath and get to try to understand what someone with this condition goes through.

Her story was interesting and brought new light on a topic I’ve never really thought about.

3.5 stars.

It’s a memoir written by a self-avowed liar and manipulator; grain, salt, etc..
Still, a compelling read.

Very interesting to get a glimpse into the mind of one of the many “sociopaths” who live among us and who lead seemingly normal lives. Sharing her internal dialogue and inner struggle gives us better insight into how some people with personality disorders experience the world, especially those whose primary pathology is apathy.

A couple observations:
Even though she alluded to the “darkness” many times, the “violent” or “criminal” thoughts and behavior she described were underwhelming and I wonder if she omitted many of the darker aspects of her psyche. There was definitely a feeling of sociopath-lite coming from the author. Although, maybe she’s just your average sociopath with mild to moderate tendencies and an uncommon desire to not be a bad person. The concept of sociopathy existing on a spectrum is interesting and I think with more research and understanding, it could lead to better outcomes for those who have access to early intervention. It sounds like this might be the aim of the author in her professional life.
