Just a stunningly beautiful book. As someone who works in a psych hospital this felt so important, and indeed for anyone who xares about mental health and the way we view mental illnesses in our society this is an essential read. Jacqueline Roy shows immense understanding and compassion of how trauma impacts mental health and explores this is to very unique ways through Gloria and Merle's perspectives, showing seamlessly how no two people respond to adverse life experiences in the same way. Despite this, Gloria and Merle's bond is s beautiful thing to watch develop. It is so easy to love these characters and get behind them, to feel so angry on their behalf when they are mistreated and to feel joy when they begin to recover and work through their own traumas to find some kind of happiness again. For a book that is so so sad at times my heart felt so warmed by the end. What a fantastic find.

A beautiful, heart-breaking, original and simply stunning work of fiction, The Fat Lady Sings challenges you to rethink mental illness. A story of two black women who meet in a psychiatric ward in a 1990s London hospital, Jacqueline Roy creates a fragmented yet enjoyable read. Once I began to piece together how the protagonists think, I truly loved it!
