3.5 STARS (rounded off to 4)! I have always love Amanda's works and this is not an exception. In the second installment of the You Are Your Own Fairytale series, she explores the magic of sisterhood. Coupled with her usual theme about writing based off of her experiences, this collection is as impactful as her previous ones.

I think the only reason why I rated it 3.5 (lower than the previous ones) is because the poems in this collection didn't resonate with as much as her previous works. But don't get me wrong, this was beautifully written. The illustrations were also amazing. I just wasn't able to connect that much. It's the it's-not-the-book-it's-me situation again, but please give this poetry collection a chance.

Shine your Icy Crown releases on January 26th, worldwide. Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel publishing for giving me a chance to read this in advance!

Exceptional as always. Amanda Lovelace's poetry is empowering, insightful, and savage in the best possible way. Her poems are short, to the point, and will stick with readers long after the book is finished. The illustrations are also beautiful and add to the book. This is the second collection in the "You Are Your Own Fairy Tale" collection and I can't wait for the third. They keep getting better!

I really like some of Amanda Lovelace's other work. Her Things That Haunt series in particular was very thought-provoking and relatable. However, Shine Your Icy Crown was not my cup of tea. It felt more like I was scrolling inspirational quotes on Instagram than a book of poetry. I do enjoy short-form poetry quite a bit, but these poems didn't feel like poetry. It was a book of sometimes preachy girl-power mantras. If it had been marketed as being a book of inspirational quotes about feminism, it would have succeeded as such. I'm giving it two stars because the artwork was beautiful.

So much love for this collection of poems! I want to give a copy to every woman I know. There is something in this book for every woman: self-care, self-love, compassion, empowerment, I could go on and on. I flagged so many lines! They are the kind of truth bombs you just want to re-read every day in the morning. Some favorites:

"It is okay not to be okay." p. 45

"let's normalize caring about each other - not out of politeness but out of genuine human compassion." p. 51

"love is not always the answer...allow your partner to be a fallible human being, a source of support...not your everything." p. 55

"i'm beginning to realize that sisters are in your life forever, while lovers usually stay in our lives only but for a moment in time. honor the fellow women in your life every single chance you get." p. 71

"embrace every part of you they told you to hate." p. 91

"motherhood is not the only way to be amazing." p. 103

I like poetry books, but this one didn’t hit. Idk if it’s bc it was in long form or bc I listened to it. Also accidentally listened to the 2nd one first…
