3.9 AVERAGE

A lovely collection of poems and affirmations for young women. Would buy this form my sister or some friends.

Thank you for the trigger warnings at the beginning, though they set my expectations for heavier writing than I found (then again, I don't have many triggers). The illustrations were pretty, cohesive and just the right amount.
Writing wise it was average but still enjoyable and I think messages young women need more of.

A twist on the Frozen theme, this installment of "You are your own fairytale" deals with the relationship with a "big sister" or what I like to think of as a wise crone or your older self. The central theme is how girls and women navigate all the "crown" (i.e. narratives) that various male characters try to impose on them. This is the distortion part of the fairytale - where the female character cuts parts of herself off, growth thin, grows big, grows tall, grows small, grows loud, grows quiet as she tries to keep up with and response to the various expectations voiced at her.

Ultimately she learns to love the body she's in, to crafter her own crown, and sit on the damn throne just as she is - supported by all the older sisters who hold her in sacredness.

"make them rue the day they underestimated you."

These were great stories and poems that pondered sisters and self-esteem and depression. In between writing, there were pages of beautiful artwork of a bird and gems in a forest. Also artwork depicting small things out of the writing and themes. They were such a great addition and absolutely beautiful. I loved the strong themes coming out of this one and how much heart was in it.

An e-ARC was provided to me by the author and publishing via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

i used to love amanda lovelace, but since starting my english lit degree i fell out of love with her and into more literary poets. i wanted to go back and see if i still liked her at all, but none of it is poetry. she writes beautiful messages - which is what captivated me when i first read her works - but some of these read like excerpts from essays (“they say never to play favorites with your children” especially) and others are affirmations more than poetry. i also hate the notion that a woman is more rebellious for not enjoying romance arcs in fairytales as she expressed in the opening two poems.

“more forgetting time. more midnight dances with yourself.

Reading 2021
Book 1: shine your icy crown by Amanda Lovelace

Whoop Whoop! Coming to you with the first review of the year. This is also my first book from Netgalley.

This book centers around two sisters and the fairy tales that little girls read as they grow up. The prince will come to sweep you off your feet and live happily ever after. The book starts with, but what happens after the story ends. Is life happily ever after, probably not. Is life as shiny and romantic as the rescue and marriage, probably not. What Lovelace conveys is "that is okay", find your happily ever after. Will that be without self-doubt and ugly times along the way? Probably not. One of the other topics in the book is about how women are not always kind to each other. I was just having a conversation with friends about how we do not always lift each other up and support each other.

This is the second Lovelace book I have read. In all honesty, I was lost in places in "the princess saves herself in this one", not so in this book. It is the second installment in the You Are Your Own Fairy Tale series. I did not feel as if I missed any content in this book because I did not read the first book in the series. This is definitely one of those books that is inspirational, a take care of yourself and love yourself for who you are. Work on your self care, be a beast, it is okay to be alone with who you are. I definitely enjoyed this book much more than the first one of Lovelace's I read. My rating 4 ⭐.

Thank you netgalley for providing me with a review copy. All opinions are my own.
