Loved the story and learning about life growing up in South Africa, but it was scattered and somewhat repetitive. Would have benefited from a strong editor.

Trevor Noah knows how to tell a story. He is able to paint a clear picture for a life that is drastically different than mine, but still connect on a human level that all can relate to. He is able to find humor through hard events as well as show fierce love for those in his life. I highly recommend listening to the audio of this book - as it Noah reads it himself, which is a real treat.

Fantastic from start to finish. Glad I waited until I came back from Africa (unintentionally) to read this because I enjoyed being a little more familiar with the setting. Emotional rollercoaster in all the best ways.

Trevor Noah is so much funnier in this memoir than he is in real life. And he’s pretty fun. This book feels like meeting a friend and hearing all about how they got to be the way they are. Though his stories are pretty specific to him, his mom and South Africa, there was still a universality to it all. Anyone who’s experienced being poor will immediately recognize that life and environment, regardless of geographic differences. And if you grew up in the 90s, this will have you laughing out loud in recognition. I’m surprised this book didn’t find me sooner. When I finished it, I immediately wanted other people around me to read it. It’s so good.

Born a Crime is brimming with that kind of humor that, maybe it wasn't funny in the moment but we can laugh now. "Hindsight humor." That's not quite right. It is sort of the "I'm laughing because it's better than crying" type of humor. No, not exactly it, either. A sort of, "make the most of a bad situation" humor. Perhaps all of these are understatements.

Trevor Noah grew up in South Africa. He was about 6 when apartheid "ended" (it's a process). It blows my mind to think that such a socio-political situation lasted until about 1990. Yet, there it is, and Trevor is here to tell us about life at the start of the new era. His birth--of a black woman by a white man--was literally illegal, at the time it occurred. His origin story is astounding and fascinating. The events of his childhood and young adulthood somehow seem at once fantastical and common. Despite the difficulty of things, the stories come out funny; Trevor Noah is a funny guy.

I am very glad he wrote this book, because it has broadened my horizons and at the same time entertained me greatly. I would recommend this book to anyone. And if you get a chance, check out the audiobook version, read by Trevor Noah himself. No one could tell his story better.

The audio version of this book is mind-blowing narrated by Trevor Noah himself. One of the best auto biographies I have ever read.
