Oh, this was delicious. There’s just something about books about academia tipping into madness….This was VE Schwab to the core, with strong Ninth House vibes and an under current of The Secret History (if it were paranormal). This book is about men who make themselves into monsters; about the blurred line between hero and villain and what happens when its crossed. The main character is unabashedly bad and evil and murderous. He is horrible and cruel and awful and yet, here I fucking am, rooting for him all the same. Theres definitely some complex stuff about morality and faith in there, but its 1am so I probably didn’t comprehend that to its deserved depth. I LOVE the setting of a university and the overall sense of something sinister taking place. At times horrifying and almost always unnerving, this delivered exactly what I was hoping it would. I did think that it was a bit slow at some points, and I’m hoping its a duology and not a trilogy. But, yeah. VE Schwab delivers once again (it seems thats her thing).

SUCH A GREAT BOOK OMG

i dont care if victor is an asshole, he killed serena, nothing else matters. to be honest, all characters in this book are made to be either currupt or currupted by proxy (ie. sydney and mitch), the façt both eli and victor are terrible people is kinda the point, they both suck, eli just has the plus of being a fucking religious fanatic and dumb as hell meanwhile victor can actually use logic and think rationally. serena is the type of character i hate the most, had everything to be the smartest person in the room and yet decided to be the stuppiest, and died for that. the ending is bittersweet as sydney is forced to live with the people that killed her sister, while believing eli was the one that did it and deeply trusting both mitch and victor. nonetheless, im happy my e quartet (or quintet? is dominic with them now?) is alive, and look, most of them only died once… or twice

V. E Schwab could email me her to-do list and I would read it AND rate it 5 stars anywhere possible AND suggest it to everyone.  Best author of our times for a reason.

This book was, in a word, intense.

It’s probably the darkest story I’ve read in a while. it’s unsettling and gruesome and yet intriguing as all hell. I couldn’t stop reading it. I had to know what was going to happen.

I absolutely love the way VE Schwab gets inside a characters mind and breaks down who they are. Most of these characters are absolute monsters, and yet there is something underneath each of them that’s understandable, that almost makes you want to sympathize with their perspective. Which is bat shit insane? They’re monsters?! but I think it adds to the magic of this storytelling.

I spent the majority of my reading this book warring between being horrified at how gruesome the story could be and absolutely loving the chaos and unravelling of the story. I think that speaks to very good writing, to be able to have the WORST characters and still keep the reader enthralled.

I’m only taking off half a star because I don’t know if this is the kind of book I could read again. But I don’t think it’s intended to be a frequent visit kind of story, so that’s not the book’s fault.
