I enjoyed this book much more than I expected. The author’s patient, thorough exploration of the characters, circumstances, and consequences of the Children’s Blizzard is totally engrossing. The unflinching but humane focus on the individuals impacted and primary source evidence reminded me of a macabre History Day presentation, and the author’s voice and description of the circumstances hearkens to the heart and character of the Midwest. The detailed descriptions of the development and aftermath or frostbite and hypothermia are as gory and graphic as any horror novel I’ve read.
Graphic: Blood, Death, Body horror, Animal death, Gore, and Injury/Injury detail
