I think Aiden Thomas did a pretty good job with this retelling of my favorite story, Peter Pan. They added such a dark feel to this and I was admittedly so creeped out at times (then again, that's not saying much because I get creeped out fairly easily).
.
At first, I was wary about how a modern take on this would go, especially with how popular it is and with how many theories surround Peter Pan himself exist as it is, but I was more surprised than not. The fantastical element of this story was really intriguing and yet surprisingly minimal, which I think worked well with the mystery element of this book.
.
What I didn't like was just how hard I personally found it to stay invested in the story as a whole. There were times I felt like the characters were just repeating themselves unnecessarily, which I found to be dragging, and doing things out of their established character norms.
.
Overall, I liked it, but didn't necessarily love it. Still, it was a pretty good modernized take on a classic story 😊
.
Also, couldn't help picturing Jeremy Sumpter in the role. No other live-action Peter Pan for me!
.
CW: trauma, murder, kidnapping, PTSD, depression,
.
Overall rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨/5

This book starts off mega slow but the last third or last quarter is really exquisite.

This book is pretty good, but the pacing is a little off.  Things are slow during the beginning and middle, and very quick at the end.  Early parts of the book we also a little repetitive.  That being said, I love how the book explores the nature of having to return to normalcy after being somewhere so magical, and the realities of never growing up.  The character interactions were on point.  The relationship between Wendy and Peter felt natural, and Jordan's concern for Wendy impacted their friendship without making either of them unlikeable.  Also the twist at the end was great! Not the greatest thing I've ever read, but it definitely had it strong points.

Who do I recommend this book to?: People who like urban fantasy, fairy tale retellings, and stories about trauma.
Will I read more by Aiden Thomas?: Just based on this book, maybe not.  However, I've heard in reviews that people generally like their debut novel, The Cemetery Boys, better, so I think I will give that one a try.

I am so glad i was able to reread this a year later, this book still means so much to me, i loved this peter pan retelling that gives such a fresh take on the tale, but a take that i even thought about before this book and when i realised where this one was going i knew it would have such a special place in my heart

The ending of this book is what saves it. I was going to rate this read two stars before the resolution came about and I saw what Thomas was trying to do with the story. But for the most part, I didn't really enjoy reading this book. The pacing was not it - there was no sense of mystery, tension or urgency despite the high stakes because those stakes were relegated to the background. Most of the plot ended up being Peter and Wendy essentially going on dates. Yet I couldn't feel invested in the romance because Peter is this kind of immortal being and Wendy is 18. Finally, I thought that the book lacked the magic and whimsy which made the original story so memorable.

But like I said, the ending saved this book. It provided a satisfying resolution. Apart from this I also liked Wendy as a narrator and I enjoyed the detail Thomas put into their description. I'm still going to keep reading their books as they always have intriguing and original premises, I just hope I can click more with their books in the future!

I love the way aiden Thomas writes! I know that with a couple more books of practice he’ll be a really masterful writer, and I will read every single one they write.

I really loved the premise and plot of this book. I've never read a Peter Pan inspired book before, but I loved how it took elements from the story and twisted them, and the twists that were made were really interesting and made for some great plot twists. I was engaged the whole way through and whilst I guessed some of what was going on, I was invested in the mystery aspect. I loved Peter as a character especially - he was so sweet and fun the whole way through and definitely kept to the original character. I liked Wendy's development over the course of the book as well. I did have a couple of issues - namely that there were some scenes (for example the fight between Wendy and Jordan, who one hundred percent felt like a plot device for Wendy to get out of the house) I felt like I had read before in different books. I also felt that sometimes certain scenes were a little unnecessary or anticlimactic. I did really love the end of the book, but the beginning and middle didn't seem to build up to it enough for my liking. Still, I was never bored throughout the book, and I did really like seeing Peter and Wendy's interactions. I really appreciated the mention of Wendy getting therapy in the end, because it's so important but often not mentioned in literature. Overall, this was a lot of fun, and I'd definitely recommend!
