Dialogue is really important to me and the exchanges between the characters feels real and either makes me laugh or breaks my heart. The politics and world building were just as excellent! A fabulous sequel, can't wait to start the last book.

Beetje saai maar leuk voor de plot van de triologie

I AM SO MAD ABOUT THIS I SWEAR I AM SO UPSET JUST WHAAAAAAT
this is one of these instances where not much happens in the majority of the book and then you read the last 20% of the book and there is nothing else to say but "well, that escalated quickly."

After a first volume a bit too simple and plain, I have to say that I really loved this second one! What an improvement on all levels!

First, the writing itself is much improved. The childish tone is gone, and we get into politics, adult emotions, grey characters. We can really tell that the author's style has improved and is now more fit for adult readers.

Characters development is much more interesting and we get to discover some new characters with a lot of personality. Nikolai is by far my favorite and Alina is finally starting to grow on me.

The book is full of adventure, really taking you for a ride, one where you can't put the book down!

I liked the first one better. It felt better paced. I look forward to finishing the trilogy

Alina and Mal's hopes for freedom are dashed when their enemies follow them across the True Sea. After a narrow escape, they make an unlikely alliance that finds them back amongst the politics of Ravkan court. Alina's great and growing power finds her in the most unlikely place... at the head of the broken Ravkan army preparing to go up against darkness itself. Having seen how power corrupted the Darkling, Alina consciously struggles to resist temptation, as his shadows continue to haunt her. Meanwhile, after all Mal has sacrificed for her, he struggles to share Alina with the world while still finding his new place in it.

This sequel to Shadow and Bone is a slow burn, a thrilling build up to what is sure to be a shocking end. At its core, it is focused on Mal and Alina, as they wonder if their destinies are at odds and Alina comes to accept that she cannot run away from hers. At the same time, she feels an immense insecurity and unworthiness in her new position. We also have the addition of a unique and fascinating character who has been cleverly crafted into the story, keeping you on your toes.
.
Except for being confused as to why the hell Alina would stay in the Darkling's chambers... I have nothing bad to say about this book, hence the high rating. I loved the pace. I loved that we see more of Mal and Alina. I loved how Alina is struggling with her fate, one she would have never chosen for herself, while always reigning in the urge to abuse her power. The ending will have you immediately picking up the next book.
